Gateway of India

The honour of being Bombay’s premier land mark would go to the Gateway of India. The first sight that would greet travel weary & shipbound Europeans after days of journey from their continent was “the great archway so ornately decorated and serene”.

Its feel very European but the décor being Indian at the same. A sight which they cherished since it was the first they saw of India & last that they would leave literally. It was on 28th February 1948 when the last British troops marched from underneath the great archway, back to merry England. Hence named as the “Gateway” to all their endevours in India.

It was built to commemorate the landing of Britain’s King George V & Queen Mary in India on 2nd December 1911. The monument finished construction on 4th December 1924.

Its made of basalt. The height is around 26 meters.
